Master jazz pianist and composer Steve Russell launches his debut CD When the Light Comes
The album features seven original compositions and a selection of classic jazz standards performed by formidable jazz artists including guitarists James Sherlock and Jim Kelly, trumpet legend John Hoffman, drummer Dave Sanders, bassist Jack Thorncraft and saxophonists Dave Addes and Tony Buchanan.
Under Steve's leadership the band unites to deliver a timeless recording. From the exquisite, reflective Consider to the energetic Julian's Jump Steve touches the listener with his finesse as composer and performer balancing harmonic and melodic perfection throughout the 10 track album.
Steve has been based in Byron Bay for the last five years, teaching piano at Southern Cross University, and gigging regularly with bassist Jack Thorncraft and drummer Dave Sanders. He has contributed his versatility and musicianship to many musical happenings including pianist for the Women in Voice productions. Steve can be heard on the recordings of several Australian jazz and blues artists, notably the ABC releases, A Good Thing on Hold, from his sister Sharny Russell, and Southeast from the Melbourne based Baartz Freeman Quintet.
Joining Steve to launch When the Light Comes are musical colleagues James Sherlock (guitar), Jack Thorncraft (bass), Ken Edie (drums), Graeme Norris (sax) and the man himself Steve Russell (keys).
