IT must be quite a while since a jazz vocalist, especially an Australian one, has released an album with just solo guitar accompaniment. Even the famous 1955 Julie London album with guitarist Barney Kessell containing the hit Cry Me a River added an acoustic bass. But if any two performers are up to the task it is this talented Brisbane duo. Award-winning vocalist Kristin Berard [ ... ]

Watermark - This could be exhibit A in the case that some of the world's most exciting jazz is being made in Australia. Slashing colours and jolting rhythms transfix you from the outset, and the levels of invention and ardour ensure the captivation does not flag.
Australian jazz vocalist and composer Kristin Berardi was announced winner of the 2006 Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition at the 40th Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on July 4th
James Sherlock's Watermark is receiving great praise - 4.5 stars from John McBeath, The Australian July 2006 "This landmark album lifts the profile of young Brisbane guitarist James Sherlock to national signifigance. The other three players are - Scott Tinkler (Trumpet), Brett Hirst (Bass) and Simon Barker (Drums) - are already in the top echelon of Australian jazz.
Award-winning vocalist Kristin Berardi has put together an album of several standards, as well as some lesser-known pieces and a few of her own compositions. James Sherlock's guitar work is outstanding, achieving a softly appropriate feel in both accompaniment and solos, while Berardi's voice floats restfully in pastel shades rather than bold primary colours. Her restraint is evident in I'm an Old Cowhand, a song that could easily have attracted a belting rendition but is more successful given this delicately swinging interpretation. Berardi weaves scat passages into many of these songs, which together with her expressive phrasing brings off an individuality on standards Alone Together, Like Someone In Love and a lively You Say You Care. Sherlock's acoustic guitar inserts clever melodic embroidery but always maintains a rhythmic pulse throughout. Of the originals, I'm Just Another Girl seems to work best, with rippling guitar chords under a quick moving melody at a slower tempo.
